All the News That Fits In 200-Words
I was asked by Seven Cycles to leave town for a week or so; Eurobike seemed like a good place to go. It was very good--as always. Here are some reasons why:
- All companies offer all things. Brand
focus appears to be as popular as tubulars.
I thought that brand consistency was a long-term strategy but I guess it
now lasts only one season. Diversification is the new focus.
- Titanium frame offerings are on the rise again. A few
new brands out there—offering cheap titanium anyway. Not quite the ideal direction but interesting
none the less.
- Titanium is the new titanium. So
many questions about titanium like I’d heard 20-years ago. New folks in the industry eager to learn
about the material. A positive sign.
More after the jump.
- All carbon kinda looks the same. It
felt like every carbon hardtail mountain bike fell out of the same mold. Similar—but not as extreme—on the road bike
front. This was particularly noticeable
with the European brands—not as noticeable on the US brands.
- Every brand has 20 generic commuter models. If
it’s pastel and has a chain guard, it’s for commuting.
- Belt drives are everywhere—except out in the world. Everyone seems to offer belts but I’m not
clear on who’s riding them.
- Eurobike is the new Interbike. Ouch. Maybe Vegas needs to create an attraction
called “Friedrichshafen”. It’d be a simple
formula: great beer; huge meal portions; no wegetables (sic).
belt drives are for English cigarettes.
